I think the primary audience for the woman in black is most likely teenagers and young adults, although the film is a 12, i don't think that many 12 year olds would be able to watch it, because the film, seems too mature for an audience of 12 year olds, although Daniel Radcliffe would bring the assumption for a younger audience. this would also mean that the audience that would watch the film, could possibly be mostly female because of the actor. these would likely be middle class too. the secondary target audience would be more middle ages people, as the movie was based on a popular novel, that middle aged people may have read, and enjoyed.
The woman in black was marketed in lots of ways, with around half of the main budget of the film going on advertising. Firstly was the teaser campaign, which included a poster, a teaser trailer, a competition and youtube videos by Radcliffe, enlisting web 2.0 by letting web users respond to him. This was followed by the main campaign, which included another poster, showing more in it this time, and a main trailer that also gave us a better idea of what the movie was about. Also, along with this were many other advertisements, such as ones online, in social media websites and in newspapers, as well as a radio advert. This was followed up by the poster being placed in places all around cities, on such things as bus stops and even on the side of buildings. The book that the film was inspired by was emphasised on too, as a try to get a secondary, more mature audience, as they are the kind of people that may have read or been interested in the book. Much of the publicity was gained by Radcliffe himself, doing countless interviews for magazines, and websites, as well as television. It was thought that people who liked Radcliffe would then want to go see him in the movie, so him going around doing all this would greatly improve the audience that would see this movie. Lastly came the promotional material, which included freebies of the book in newspapers, school activity, a redesigned book cover featuring Radcliffe on the front, competitions, merchandise (t-shirts, mugs etc.) and a soundtrack.
I think the marketing materials for this film were appropriate, as they wanted to reach out to as larger audience as they could, and that's exactly what they did, their audience spanning from hardcore horror fans, to fans of harry potter. the marketing managed this by using different methods to reach out to different audience, the horror fans being drawn in by the scares, for example they watched the trailer and liked what they saw, so went to see it. However the harry potter fans were drawn in most likely by Radcliffe, who did extensive series of interviews and all sorts to reach out to his, and potter's fans.
The film had quite a big release, with 2,855 screens showing it on is opening weekend in the USA, and 412 in the UK.
The woman in black took approximately $17,000,000 to make, but in its opening weekend, it grossed $20,874,072 in America, and a further £3,153,020 in the UK, making a profit in the first weekend, and then, at the end of April it got to over $50,000,000, which probably made a massive impact on the industry as a huge profit was made.
The film was so successful because of many reasons, but mostly because of Daniel Radcliffe, who gave the film a lot of publicity due to his star profile and the fact he tried so hard to get through to all sorts of different audiences, using youtube mostly and advertising the movie, through competitions etc. Also, he appeared on chat shows and in magazines talking about the film, in a way to emphasise he was the lead character and that
