A film distributor coordinates all of this, this could be an individual or a company, that basically decides when and where the movie is shown, however if they do not own theaters or film distribution networks, they may have to do this through other sub-distributors.
Reach related to film distribution because of the way that it identifies the target audience. This means that they can then identify what the target audience likes and then plan the advertising accordingly, to attract as many people as possible.
A distribution plan maps out the way in which the film would be released to the public. This includes when and where the film will be shown, according to the target audience and when and where they would be most likely to want to see the film. Also, they need to take into consideration: competition for the film, the star power, and the certificate the film has been given.
A marketing plan is part of an overall business plan, so in turn used to make as much profit out of the movie as possible. This means that they have to do everything possible in order to get as many people to go see the film as possible, so they have to take lots of things into consideration. These include: figuring out the target audience, and planning the film around them, competition, so working around other films that may be releasing a similar genre of film in the same period of time, so release dates may be changed to respond to this, also trying to get a famous actor/actress into the movie will boost numbers for audience, as well as trying to get cast members to attend premieres/attract publicity in other ways, such as interviews etc., trying to get the film to have good reviews so people are tempted to go and see it if maybe they were unsure before, as well as trying to get nominations for/awards so that people know that it is a good film, as it has been proven.
The difference between advertising, publicity and promotion is that advertising is made by the people who are creating the film, so it is basically promoting itself. publicity is more about other people writing about or showing interest in the film, this can range from anything from news articles to appearances on chat shows. Promotion is a way of advertising using other means than what is readily available to the creators of the film, in places such as on buses, or in shops. This also opens an opportunity for the audience to interact with the film by entering in competitions or going on the website.
Here is a teaser poster and the normal poster for the 2010 remake of a nightmare on elm street. The teaser poster is on the left, and the normal is on the right. you can tell this because of the way the teaser poster doesn't really give anything away in terms of the film, but the normal poster does.
