DISTINCT analysis of the horror genre

Horror conventions:
Setting: Isolated places, places with a history, homes (cellars and attics), night time, medical institutions, dreams, the east.
Technical codes: Expressive, canted angles, ECU's on victim, POV, depth of frame, unsettling jumps, sudden increases in editing pace, sound very important.
Iconography: Black and red, dim lighting, unnatural light, mise-en-scene involves weapons, childhood.
Narrative structure: Todorov, complicated victim/hero, formulaic narratives, Propp, Barthes and Levi Strauss.
Characters: Main girl, androgynous, virginal, monster with hidden secret/past, moronic teenagers, children, useless law enforcers, the ‘have a go’ hero, mad scientists, people who refuse to believe.

Themes: Binary opposites, repressed thoughts, hidden evil, science out of control, what happens when you die, ideologies.
